Interpreting in Wisconsin
Sign Language Interpreters in Wisconsin must be licensed for the specific setting they work in.

Educational Sign Language Interpreters are licensed by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI.) They must be credentialed by the EIPA with a score of 3.5 or above. K-12 Interpreters are related service providers. They are not paraprofessionals or aides.

Community Based or Freelance Interpreters must be licensed by the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS.) They must be credentialed by RID (NIC) or the Board of Evaluators of Interpreters (BEI-Basic or BEI-Advanced). There are 2 DSPS license tiers which determine what kinds of settings the interpreter can work in - Intermediate or Advanced. Intermediate interpreters should not be assigned to medical, legal, or mental health settings.
